2012 Spring Adult Class Schedule
We offer weekly classes in clogging,painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, mixed media, metal design, jewelry design, and photography! Classes typically meet once a week for six weeks. Most adult level classes are open to ages 18 and up. We have recently added an Intro to Potter’s Wheel class for teens that meets on Friday nights and a new dance component to our classes-clogging! Spring Session I
NEW CLASS ADDITION: Clogging

Introduction to Clogging
Tuesdays 6:00 – 8:00pm (6 classes)
Teach your feet a new language – clogging! This class will introduce students to percussive footwork in the style of the Green Grass Cloggers organized by East Carolina University students in 1971. They combined traditional and original footwork with square dance figures, and inspired dance groups in several states and countries. Students will gain a foundation for improvisation. Participants will need to bring comfortable shoes that will allow them to slide on wood floors. No experience is necessary! Students should be able to be able to maintain movement for most of the class time.

Ceramics & Pottery
OPEN POTTERY STUDIO As a benefit of enrollment in our pottery
program, current students are able to come in and work anytime during
our operating hours. If the main classroom is in use, students are
welcome to use the open studio classroom in our facility. This open
studio room includes 2 potter’s wheels as well as table room for
handbuilding a slab roller, and an extruder.

Intermediate Potter’s Wheel: A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party!
Tuesdays 6:00 – 8:30pm (6 classes)
You are cordially invited to the Mad Hatter’s Tea party! Join us as we make traditional and alternative teapots. This class will guide you through the challenges inherent to making teapots. Special topics will include: fitting lids, pouring spouts, handle placement, knobs/finials, and glazing considerations. Potters should be able to center and handle 2 lbs. of clay. Projects include: classic English teapots, teapots in two parts, and ring teapots. This class is project intensive and potters will need to work outside of class to complete their teapots.[Min. 6 Max. 8]

This class will focus on pitchers of various sizes and intended uses. In addition to exploring functional and decorative pitchers, students will also make a drinking vessel set to match. (We ask that students enrolling in this class have prior experience.)

Metal Design & Jewelry Making
Advanced Metal Design & Enameling
Tuesdays 6:00-8:30pm (6 classes)
Advanced Students will work with the instructor to problem solve and refine their skills in the areas of metalsmithing and enameling while working within the format of a pendant or brooch. The instructor will demonstrate sifting, wetpacking, champlevé, graphite embedding, and finishing techniques. Also demonstrated will be a number of mechanisms with which to set enamels. Other techniques will be introduced as needed on a case per case basis. Basic fabrication skills recommended, but not required. [min 6, max7] Instructor: Joshua Craig

Join us this session to make pottery that will change an ordinary gathering into a Fiesta! Improve your throwing skills and learn alteration techniques as we make serving pots fit for any celebration. Projects can be adjusted to accommodate the skill level of intermediate and advanced potter’s. Projects include: double-dipping bowls, chip and dip servers, cheese plates, and margarita goblets.

Advanced students will work with the instructor to problem solve and refine their skills in the area of metalsmithing with an emphasis on forging. Students will learn the fundamentals of tapering, spreading, squaring, and twisting. Attention will be paid to proper technique, and to ways the studio jeweler can incorporate forging operations into their current jewelry or hollowware for decorative and functional effect. Other techniques will be introduced as needed on a case-by-case basis. Basic fabrication skills recommended, but not required.

About Cathy: Cathy has lived in eastern North Carolina her entire life. She received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University in December 2010 as well as minors in Business and English. Currently, she teaches the adult Painting and Drawing class here at PCAC at Emerge on Thursday nights in addition to several private lessons during the week with students of varying ages. Proficient in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, she specializes in mixed media and painting portraits.

About Valda: A native Washingtonian, she has also lived in Florida, where she received a degree in photography from Daytona State College. She also studied at East Carolina University and Chowan College. After returning to Eastern North Carolina, Valda turned to jewelry, which began with a single class and is now a full time business. Mixing wire, beads, newly acquired metal skills, and her own handcrafted porcelain pendants; she creates jewelry that is distinctly her own style. She also teaches jewelry-making/wire wrapping classes at Riverwalk Gallery and Art Center in Washington; encouraging students not simply to recreate her style, but to learn skills and techniques so that they can create their own pieces.

Design With Wine: Bookmaking
Friday, April 20th
Join us for a fun-filled night of making your own handmade books. Participants will be making simple and elegant book structures that can be enhanced, ornamented, and built up. We will learn to make pockets, windows, and closures, giving an arsenal of forms and tools to fit your ideas while we wax poetic (and paper). This is a great introduction to be thinking in the book format and creating objects that are endless; the only limits are the ones you set!

About Lisa Beth: Lisa Beth Robinson is the proprietor of Somnambulist Tango Press where she makes aretist books (letterpress, papermaking, and printmaking) and is a teaching instructor at East Carolina University. Her books visualize the relationship between language and experience, making connections between disassociated objects and concerns. Her degrees are from the Johnson Center at the University of Redlands and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ceramics Workshop: Surface Design
Instructor: Gail Ritzer
Join us for this hands-on, two-part workshop, taught by Gail Ritzer, a local handbuilder and ceramic sculptor who excels in the surface treatment of clay works. This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced ceramicists who wish to explore various surface treatment techniques.

Workshop I: Wet Clay Surface Design
In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment several methods to create interesting surfaces on wet clay. This workshop will cover incising/drawing on underglazes and creating texture using small molds, unlikely objects such as shells, stamps, and more! Bring a photo of your favorite impressionist painter (Monet, Van Gogh, etc) and receive instruction on recreating the painterly strokes on your pottery using underglazes.

Workshop II: Bisque Clay Surface Design
Join us for part two of exploring the wealth of possibility in creative surface treatment of your bisque clay work. This great workshop will delve into staining, glazing, and painting with acrylic on textured work. Glaze application techniques will also be addressed.
